Obituary of Joseph John Mayer

After living a long and authentic life, the man, the myth, the legend, Joe Mayer of Regina Beach, passed away on Friday February 25, 2022. 

He was predeceased by his wife Bev; son-in-law, Greg; parents John and Elizabeth; siblings Julia (Art), Evelyn (George), Victoria (Alois), Theresia (John), Fred (Viola), Peter, Gordan (Dawn), Norman (Ivy), Jim, and Gary (Helen); as well as sister-in-law, Joan.

Joe is survived by his son Terry (Heather); daughter Carrie; grandchildren Melanie (Linden), Hillary (Aaron), Kurtis (Sarah), Jack and Kate; great grandchildren Everly, Liam, Lennox and Thea; special friend Betty; sister Agnes; and sisters-in-law, Mary and Anne.

Born in Grayson, SK Joe was the 9th of 12 children of John and Elizabeth.  He moved to Regina in his young adulthood and met Beverley Ratcliffe whom he married in 1963.  They moved to Regina Beach in 1965 to raise their family and set down roots.  Joe owned the boat rentals for many years before working in construction and dabbling with his own backhoe business before becoming the town foreman in the mid 1970’s, a position he held for many years before retiring in November 1998.  If anyone needed to know the location of any water valve or underground line, Joe was the one who would know from memory.

Joe was the original MacGyver.  There was nothing he couldn’t fix, improve or invent with repurposed materials, chicken wire, bent screws and nails and duct tape.  He was a crib master extraordinaire (self-proclaimed), dazzled on the golf course with his cross handed grip, and master angler with supporting documentation.  He would use his big strong hands to fillet fish with the precision of a surgeon, leaving no bone behind.  After his retirement, Joe lived the life that many of us dream of.  Golf, fish, play crib, have coffee with his pals, tinker, repeat.  Most summer days he was able to cover them all. 

A Celebration of Joe’s life will be held at South Shore School, Regina Beach, on Saturday March 12, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. Please come in casual attire, golf shirts preferred, with a story to share.
