Obituary of Sonia Iris Cameron

Sonia Cameron passed away peacefully on Thursday April 21, 2022 but will live on forever in the hearts of her husband Stuart; her daughters Alison, Sheila, and Sandi; her son-in-law Doug Mitchell; and her grandchildren Sarah and Luke.

She lived her life with extraordinary zest, never failing to light up the space around her with her vivacious spirit, sense of humour, and infectious laughter. She will be remembered for this and much more, including her beauty, impeccable sense of style, generous nature, and concern for others. She gave unstintingly of her time, energy, and abilities to worthy causes. 

Sonia was born in Rose Valley Saskatchewan and moved to Regina with her parents when she was a grade 10 student at Canora Composite High School. She then continued her education at Balfour Collegiate. Following her graduation, she attended Business College in Regina and went on to become the office manager of the Regina Branch of North America Life Insurance Company. Her position occasionally took her to Toronto, then Saskatoon, where she met Stuart, a third-year law student. They married shortly after he graduated and made Regina their home. 

The family later moved to Ottawa for a time, where Sonia worked for the Separate School Board as an administrative assistant. On their return to Regina, she ran a nutrition program at St. Augustine and Sacred Heart elementary schools, a position she found particularly fulfilling. She loved the interaction with the kids, all whom adored her. She took great delight in later encountering many of them as adults. They would express fond memories of their time with her. She also served on the Parish Council of Christ the King Church and later, on the Board of Director of College Gardens Condominium Corporation. 

She combined all of this with a love of books, music, gardening, wildlife, playing cards, and avidly following the Saskatchewan Roughriders of course. Her roses and interest in wildlife were legendary, as was her love of cottage life at Kanata Valley among the birds, squirrels, rabbits and deer and especially her family.      

Having regard for the state of the pandemic, Sonia preferred to forego a funeral service, opting instead for family prayers, followed by cremation and the placement of her ashes in a columbarium among the trees at Riverside Memorial Cemetery. The simplicity of this appealed to her.  In lieu of flowers, donations in remembrance of Sonia may be made to the Regina Humane Society, one of her favourite charities.
