So sorry to hear of John’s passing Jeanie. Even though we met for the first time at the U of A back in the early 60’s and the visits have been sporadic since then, I will always remember his sparkling wit and interesting , informative conversations . May God bless you Jeanie and may He welcome John into his Eternal Reward.

I was lucky to have taught with John for 4 glorious years at Sheldon. I use the term glorious because Sheldon at that time took a back seat to no other school. Our students competed with anyone in academics, athletics, and good citizenship. The school was that good because of the staff. And I certainly include John as a positive force in that staff makeup. Those four years are some of the best of my career, thanks to friends like John. Thanks John for showing patience and understanding with a poor mathematics person.

Our deepest sympathies go out to you, Jeannie. Jocelyn and I are very sad to hear of John's passing. John was a colleague, a mentor, and a friend to me. He was a great teacher - respected by his students and fellow teachers. John's insight and great sense of humour always made for great conversation and visits. His painting career in his retirement showed just how talented he was. His warm and welcoming demeanour always made people at ease around him; John made friends wherever he went. John will be missed but never forgotten.

Sorry to hear of John's passing. Bruce has many fond memories of John at Sheldon. He loved his literature and few could state their opinion at a staff meeting as well or as strongly as John. Both of us enjoyed our visits with both of you at Sheldon social events. Thinking of you. Sending hugs, Bruce and Diane Hern

I'm so sorry to read this. Mr. MacFarlane was my English teacher a million years ago but when I heard he had passed many warm memories returned. In particular, I recall a conversation we had and his advice, which has remained with me for over 30 years. I have since shared it with countless people, especially my own children. It boils down to "fake it until you can make it" (I think he may have even had this posted in his classroom?). He shared this with much more wisdom and eloquence than I can do justice to, but I will continue to carry the conversation, and his compassion and kindness, with me always. We never know the impact and influence we have on people. I wish I had thought to tell him in the many years since. My sincere condolences to all who knew and loved him.

Mr. McFarlane was an amazing teacher who took the time to bring what he was teaching to life. I think I took at least 3 English classes from him because he was passionate about the work, passionate about teaching and passionate about his students. He even went to the effort to have us all over to his home to listen to music of the era when we were learning about Chaucer's Canterbury Tales. I graduated High School 45 years ago but still remember him fondly and thank him for inciting learning in me.

Mr. MacFarlane was the only teacher I experienced as having true compassion for all students, especially troubled ones. He cared for me all through high school. In my interactions for decades after high school he remembered everything and was always kind. He attended both my parents funerals and gave me a laminated hand written note both times. A truly fine man and educator. He had immense impact on my life. It is sad to lose a person that was so important to many. Ian Jewsbury

Dear Jeannie. Ken and I are saddened with the news of John's passing. Ken and I enjoyed our visits with him, hearing his stories and adventures, and having him share his knowledge, which was vast! He was a real gem, and we know how much he loved (and adored) you, "his dear Jeannie"! I know that you had many years together (50+) but as others have already said, it is never enough. Our heartfelt condolences are being sent your way. We know you are a strong woman, and that your faith will carry you through this new journey of your life. But remember, John will always be there beside you, in spirit!

I was saddened to hear from Jeannie that John has passed. He was an outstanding teacher, who shared his passion for literature with thousands of students, a talented artist and a great person.
His raucous laugh echoed throughout the room after sharing one of his stories. He enjoyed and appreciated life, even in his last few years. His physicians and Jeannie worked miracles in assisting him through his health challenges and giving all of us more time with him.
I will always remember, in June 1972, when John asked Dunc Fisher and I to move "a few boxes" from his apartment on Rae Street (across the parking lot from 'The Den') to his new home on Albert Street. We spent the entire day hauling 50-60 pound boxes of classical LP's and his leather-bound literary classics down to the. John rewarded us handsomely - 6 Black Label beer (warm)!
John and Jeannie were always welcoming when we dropped by for a visit when in town. Jeannie caught us up on all the 'gossip' and John listened patiently. He often shared his latest masterpiece.
We have all been enriched by knowing John and our deepest condolences to Jeannie and their family.

Dear Jeannie
We are so sorry to hear of John's passing. I have fond memories of John dating back to the 60's at Sheldon-Williams where he tried his best to install his love of Chaucer in a bunch of Grade 12 louts! He was always positive and enthusiastic; a wonderful teacher with a broad smile and a great sense of humour. He has had a huge impact on so many people throughout his life.
We have stayed in touch through all these years and have always appreciated our visits, conversations and correspondence and will always cherish our pieces of his extraordinary art.
Our thoughts are with you at this very sad time.

Mr. Macfarlane, as I still always think of him, was my favourite teacher and the inspiration for my life as a journalist. He encouraged my writing and for that, I have thought of him and mentioned him to others many, many times over the years. I can still see him in my mind's eye, striding the head of the classroom, reading Shakespeare or Chaucer and bringing literature to life. I'm truly saddened to hear of his passing, and send you my heartfelt condolences. RIP Mr. M. Cinda Chavich Victoria, BC
