Obituary of Alice Lorraine Howse

Alice Lorraine Howse (nee Lee), passed away peacefully, at the age of 82 years, in the early hours of Monday, January 9, 2023 at the Coteau Range Manor, Avonlea, Saskatchewan.  Alice, along with her twin sister Lorraine were born on April 27, 1940 on the family farm near Forward, Saskatchewan.  Alice received her education in Khedive, Saskatchewan, and grew up helping in every way on the family farm.  She met Rodger, the love of her life and was married to him in June of 1958.  They settled on a small mixed farm south of Avonlea in the hills, where they raised 3 children, Warren, Linda and Leonard.  Through the years, Rodger and Alice did their best farming the land and caring for livestock.  In later years, Alice worked various jobs outside the home and was employed at the Blue Hills Motor Inn, various highway construction crews, and at Notre Dame College. She retired in 1993.

Alice loved playing cards, board games, and doing puzzles, especially on cold winter days. Any type of gathering with family or friends, at the Friendly Neighbours drop-in center, or Coteau Range Manor always included some type of game. She was quick to instigate a game at the Manor, coaxing others to join in and play. Alice and Rodger spent many years league bowling in Parry, Saskatchewan and loved it so much. It would take some pretty bad weather for them to miss a week. 

She enjoyed listening to old time country music, especially one of her favorite songs, From a Jack to a King. Her and Rodger attended many old time music dances and in later years enjoyed Yodel Fest annually in Airdrie, Alberta. 

Alice was very proud of a special collection she started on one of her trips to B.C. Tiny, little cast metal pencil sharpeners replicating various antiques quickly grew to around 200. Everyone was neatly displayed on the walls of her home, and she loved to talk about them and show them off. 

Every memory from every event was captured on her camera, she never left home without it. The family would often joke about her behaving like a foreign tourist, and she would just carry on with “Wait, I need to get another picture!”  Her photo albums needed a closet exclusively for them, all in order, numbered and documented.  

Alice was busy in the community, sitting on the board of the Friendly Neighbours, Saskatchewan Housing Authority, and was active with the Avonlea United Church.  She spent several years reporting for the Deep South Star newspaper.  She loved the opportunities this brought for her by meeting so many new people and keeping up with the younger generation’s activities and events.

Alice will be forever remembered by her children Warren (Michelle) Howse of Avonlea, Sask., Linda (Lyle) Boston of Regina, Sask., and Len Howse of Rowatt, Sask. (special friend, Cheryl Ward of Moose Jaw, SK); grandson Nathanial Boston of Regina, Sask.; step grandchildren Vivian (Matthew) Marinelli of Pearland Texas, Brendt (Jaimie) Boston of Fernie, B.C., Clint Boston of Moose Jaw, SK, and Darcy (Amanda) Boston of Regina, SK; brother Norman (Bonny) Lee of Pangman, Sask.; sister-in-law Sharon Howse of Avonlea, Sask.; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and friends. She was predeceased by her husband of 53 years, Rodger; infant daughter Betty Ann; daughter-in-law Shelly Howse; parents Bert and Ann Lee; twin sister Lorraine; brother-in-law Douglas Cameron; nephew Dan Cameron; mother and father-in-law George and Jane Howse; stepfather Chris Putte; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Isabell Thorpe, Harold Howse, Leonard and Velma Howse, Everett and Margaret Howse, John and Dorothy Howse, Doris and Tommy Sambrook, and Clarence Howse.  A Celebration of Alice’s Life will be held at Avonlea United Church, 200 1 Ave, Avonlea, SK, on Monday, January 23, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. and fellowship to follow at the Avonlea Community Hall, 315 Main Street, Avonlea, SK.

A very special thank you to all the staff of the Coteau Range Manor for the excellent care and compassion you provided, and to all the volunteers that gave your time in anyway. Alice enjoyed the music, church services and activities so much.  You are all truly angels.
