Obituary of Roy Masaru Ohashi

On Jan 31, 2023, Roy Ohashi passed away peacefully at the age of 93.

He was predeceased by his brother William and is survived by brothers David and Jack; brother-in-law Robert (Anna) Takashiba; sister-in-law Lilly Tsubaki; nine nieces and nephews and their extended families.  He will be missed by Alice, his wife of 66 years; daughters Karen, Kiyomi (Dwight) Kirkpatrick, Kim (Martin Davies); son Ken (Charita); and four granddaughters (Caitlyn, Ciara, Kaya, Hana).

Born and raised in Regina, he worked for several years before returning to university in his mid-30’s to become a math teacher. He taught at Central, Balfour and Thom Collegiates, and became Math Department Head at all three schools. In addition to coaching high school wrestling, he helped to introduce calculus at the high school level, taught Accreditation workshops for teachers across the province, and wrote the first textbook for the Alternate Math program.

He also dabbled in painting and pottery-making and spent many years creating sandblasted and stained-glass art.  Some of his artwork can be seen at St Paul’s Columbarium and Riverside Memorial Park Cemetery.

The family expresses their gratitude to the Palliative Care Unit at Pasqua Hospital and to staff and residents at Harbour Landing Village for their kindness and compassionate care.

A memorial service will be held at St Paul’s Cathedral, Regina, SK, on Saturday, May 13, at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, friends who so wish may make a memorial donation to the St Paul’s Building Fund or to a charity of your choice. To view the livestream, please click the link above.
