I met Dave in 1999 just after arriving in Canada.. Straight away I liked him with his incredible knowledge of record labels and obscure British bands.. what a guy! He’d even burn cds from his extensive personal collection. Thanks to Dave, I got a slot at CJTR with my own show, British Fusion..
Rest easy mate.

Thank you Dave for all your hours in the record shop. It really added something special to the city. After a few visits, he would greet me by name which is rare these days. I will miss our conversations about whatever strange things were happening in the world, which would likely finish with a good chuckle. My oddest memory was when a person out of breath ducked into the store, peeping back out the door, Dave asked him if he needed something, the dude replied “I gotta hide here”. Dave casually replied okay, sure.

I met and got to know Dave at the Scarth Street location of Records on Wheels. Over the years we would chat in store or join up for a concert at a local venue. One day on Scarth Street, Dave and I were chatting and a young lad came in and saw a new Deicide release and expressed his joy by bursting out with Deicide - F*****g deadly. Well, the young man moved on shortly after and Dave and I smiled and at the same time said - Deicide - well you know the rest. Over the years, through various moves, I followed Dave as he helped me build my collection. And yes, every so often we looked at each other, smiled and said f*****g deadly and proceeded to laugh all over again - not at the young man but at his over exuberant enthusiasm for one of his favourites.
Dave and my family attended the ZZ Top concert in Regina a few years back and had our ears pinned back by the volume - Dave and I loved it - my wife and daughter - a little less. Recently, Dave and I had been sharing UFC Fight Nights. Dave was a knowledgeable fan, and could colourfully describe the action more enjoyably than the commentators Dave knew his fighters and was always very animated while watching - as a former fight trainer, it was almost more fun to watch Dave than the fight on that huge screen TV of his.
Dave - I miss you and your knowledge, personality, sense of humour and our visits whether at the store or during fight nights. My condolences to all family and friends on the loss of such a wonderful human being as Dave. Rest in peace my friend. DM

It wasn't to long ago that I just talked to Dave and we were to get together
soon have a few beers and listen to some music. I knew Dave well during during his time
here in Saskatoon. No one was more easy going or more knowledgeable about
all kinds of music. I worked with Dave in the North and got to be good friends.
All I can say is I'm shocked and know he will be missed. My condolences to Dave's family.
A great guy period.

Dave introduced me to quite a bit of the music that I still listen to back in the early 90s at ROW in Regina. He was a great guy and fun to talk music with. My condolences to his family and friends. Rest in peace and rock on Dave.

My condolences to Dave's family and friends. I went to the University of Regina from 1986-1990, and when Records on Wheels opened in 1987 (I think?) it was a very happy day in this young man's life. The store was always a great place to hang out Saturday morning or afternoon--Dave himself, Brian Wall, Rob Reid, companionable and knowledgeable people all. If I think about the bands I loved from that era, the Meat Puppets, Pixies, Jazz Butcher, Galaxie 500, chances are I bought the records at the store or they were bands Dave introduced me to. Often got tickets for the best local shows from Dave too. I left Saskatchewan in 1990, but any time I was back in Regina I went to the store to catch up a bit, and I was still getting the X-Ray emails with the new arrivals up until two weeks ago, so it's safe to say Dave continued to introduce me to new music, even from 2000 km away. He was a true gentleman and a community builder, the kind of person about whom you can only think of good things, kindness, humour, generosity, and that infectious laugh. I am very sorry for your loss and the community's loss.

Heartfelt condolences to Dave's family and close firends. I first met Dave in 1979 after moving to Saskatoon from Ontario. A few years later, aftter opening Records On Wheels in Saskatoon, I got to know Dave quite well after he had become a rregular customer at the store. He then became part of the staff for a short time and one day approached me about becoming partners in a second store in the city. I told him that I'd only be competing against myself but that Regina could really use an independent record shop. So, with a few misgivings about having to leave Saskatoon, Dave moved down to Regina and he and I became partners in a Records on Wheels store on Scarth Street. A number of years later, Dave took over the business on his own. Based on his experience while working for me in Saskatoon, as well as on his love of music and his genial manner of dealing with people, I was confident that Dave would become quite successful as an owner/operator of a record shop. Due to his good nature, Dave and I never had even one argument during the years we were business partners, which is a rarity. And I'm proud to say that he and I remained good friends right up until his passing.

Like so many other people, I met Dave through X-Ray records. He is/was an integral part of the music community. If there was a band you were into, he'd introduce you to half a dozen others for you to explore. He was like an encyclopedia for alternative music! One time he gave me a promo poster for one of my favorite bands that I had on my walls for several years. He was so thoughtful and caring. He's gonna be greatly missed <3

Dave was guru-like wise in the ways of classic rock LPs and above-and-beyond helpful as I built my internet radio network circa 2018-2021. I rarely go downtown now but, when I do, I always pop into X-Ray. I thank the good Lord that I did so in mid-May and enjoyed another chat with one of the very best. Dave will be missed by music-lovers all over Saskatchewan and beyond. My condolences to his family.

Like many, I had the pleasure of meeting Dave's acquaintance the first time going in to Records On Wheels. He was a gem of a guy, who took the time to talk to you....he wasn't just "that guy at the record store". Over the years, no matter what I was looking for, he was always so helpful and knowledgeable. I loved popping in and chatting with him, and browsing through records.
He also gave me a few great recommendations of some obscure music, which became some of my favourite albums.
Regina has lost a wonderful ambassador for the city, he will be missed.
My condolences to all the family.

Dave was one of the best friends I ever had. He was always supportive of me and proud of me. He gave me so much in my life but what I appreciate most is the confidence he gave me by allowing me to work for him at his store.Dave will never be forgotten. His legacy will live on and on. Dave is Regina Royalty plain and simple.
I love you and miss you Dave.

Dave and XRay were such an important part of my formative years. He always made this shy nerd feel welcome and leave with a smile, typically from excitment over a new band to check out or a new purchase (leaving Dave's empty handed has always been a challenge as we all know).
Now after working at Vintage Vinyl the last 12 years, I can safely say Dave was the best neighbor we could have asked for. He was the go to spot for die hard collectors and new fans alike, always able to get you the album you didn't know you needed. The back and forth community we have had all these years will be greatly missed.
I'll remember Dave most for his laid-back humour, his impeccable music recommendations, and of course his smile. My sincere condolences to his family, friends, and the community he was such a huge part of.

A lovely tribute. My favourite line is "they came for the music, but they stayed for Dave". So true. Dave was so much more than a music merchant. Aside from dropping a lot of dough and sharing many good times at his store, I also had the pleasure of working with Dave on CBC radio's weekly "Record Bin" segment where his vast knowledge and easy-going manner shone through.
Warm condolences to Dave's family and to the huge community of music lovers that he helped create.

Dave had a huge impact on helping me develop a love of music
Dave sold a confused little headbanger liscenced to ill and PE’s “it takes a nation of millions…..” and frankly left me happier for it, but even more confused
Dave brought in records you would not find anywhere else and they were always with the risk
Dave shaped a lot of people and gave them a place to come for something that would bring them joy

My deepest sympathies to all of Dave's family and friends on his passing. The news came as a great wave of sadness to all who knew him, and his influence and friendship remain dear to our hearts ,as they will for many years hence.
I first met Dave in 1987 and was employed at Records On Wheels for a time, which I consider an important part of my own as a passionate fan of music. Like those also close to him, his influence on me was deep and true. I have never met a person with such a broad knowledge of music, and the ability to tap into one's interest as if it were a rare sense. Well, it really was rare. That's how special he was. I owe my love of so much music to his recommendations, and I was a long-time customer at ROW before I moved to Japan in 1995. Import record days at ROW were special, the highlight of my week, and Dave fostered a community of like-minded musical travellers as we would gather around the boxes, sifting through the new releases. It was a golden age in Regina, and Dave was a major part of it all. Whenever I returned to Canada for a visit, I would make a point of dropping by X-Ray, still with that same sense of awe and wonder I felt years earlier, when his shop first opened.
I'll close with some lines from Nick Drake's 'Cello Song', as Dave introduced me to Nick's music. I always think of him without fail when I listen to Drake.
'You sail to the sky
On the crest of a wave'
Thank you, Dave. Sail on, my friend.

Dave was a friend and long-time colleague at Regina Community Radio. CJTR actually owes its existence to his pioneering efforts to get it established as well as his dedication to its survival. On my show, The Dog Run between 4-6PM tomorrow, June 2nd. I will play “Anyway The Wind Blows” by JJ Cale and Eric Clapton in honour of his terrific radio show of that name. To his family and close friends I offer my condolences on the passing of this good man.
