KUZENKO, David

It is with deep sadness that we announce the sudden and unexpected passing of David Kuzenko on Thursday May 25th, 2023, in Regina, SK. His family was by his side.

Dave was born on February 25th, 1956, in Winnipeg, Manitoba and grew up in the small town of Niverville, MB. He discovered his deep passion for music at a very young age, often hitching rides into Winnipeg to attend shows in his early teenage years. After high school he moved to Saskatoon, working as a geochemical tech with AMOK Mining Company for a number of years before starting work at the radio station CFMC (FM 103). In 1987, Dave opened a Records on Wheels franchise at the Scarth Street Mall in Regina SK, which began his 37-year dream career. In 1996, the store underwent a name change to X-Ray Records, as Dave took over independently. The store became a fixture in the city, a hub and a home for music lovers and anyone else who walked through its doors. Dave had an immense knowledge and respect for both the music and the listener, his passion, spirit, and music recommendations gave others the space to explore music outside the lines. Dave had the ability to connect with anybody, his calm and easy-going nature made conversation easy. People came in for the music, and stayed for Dave, lifelong friendships and a loyal community resulting.

Outside of the store, Dave was an integral part of the founding and success of the community radio station, CJTR 91.3FM. Prior to the commencement of the community radio station, Dave had a weekly afternoon show on CBC Radio called “The Record Bin”.

Dave was the most supportive and loving father of two daughters, throwing baseballs in the backyard when they were small, and talking about all things life as they grew up. Dave was also a proud grandpa to two little grandsons, lovingly known as “Grandpa with the ponytail”. He will be remembered by his family as an incredible cook, a lifelong Blue Jays fan, a craft cocktail connoisseur, with the best laugh and sense of humour.

Dave is predeceased by his parents, William and Jean, his brother Jim and lovingly remembered by his daughters Ivy and Anastasia (Cody), grandsons Torr and Rowe, his sister Debbie (friend Ronnie), and niece Shawna (TJ). Dave was extremely loved in his community and will be dearly missed by many close friends and acquaintances.

There will be a Celebration of Dave’s Life at the Conexus Arts Centre in Regina, SK at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 21st, 2023. In lieu of flowers, please continue to honour Dave’s lifelong work by supporting local business and spin a record in his name.
