Obituary of Dennis Gerald Ulmer

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the unexpected passing of Dennis Gerald Ulmer on Thursday, May 25, 2023 at the age of 71. Dennis is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Debbie; his sons Jeff (Robyn) and Jason (Erin) and his daughter Jennifer (Quinn). He held immeasurable pride for his family, which only grew larger with his 7 grandchildren. Tyson, Dane, Caden, Wyatt, Kyla, Jaydee & Braxyn will miss their time spent with “Papa” and his love and support in all of their activities.
Dennis is survived by his brothers Doug (Bernie) and David (Shelley); his sister Debby Wisniewski and his sister-in-law Rhonda Ulmer; sister-in-law Donna Hehir; brother-in-law Lyle Frederick (Minota) and sister-in-law Glenny Eberts. He also leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews and extended family. He was predeceased by his parents Gerald and Verna Ulmer; his brother Dale; and his father and mother-in-law Merle and Maureen Frederick; his brother-in-law Richard Eberts and his brother-in-law Bob Hehir.
Dennis grew up in Bethune, Saskatchewan before moving to Wilcox, Saskatchewan to complete his Bachelor of Arts degree at Athol Murray College of Notre Dame in 1972. After obtaining his Bachelor of Education at St. Francis Xavier University in Antigonish, Nova Scotia in 1973, he would return to Wilcox to begin teaching at Notre Dame. During his 30 years at Notre Dame, Dennis taught English, became the Dean of Academics, coached numerous championship hockey teams, coached Team Saskatchewan at the Canada Games, became mayor of the Town of Wilcox, coached youth hockey, football, baseball and girls softball and had all 3 of his children graduate with honours from Notre Dame. Summers were spent mostly at Wee Too Beach on Last Mountain Lake, where he enjoyed quality time at “the lake” with family and friends.
After his retirement from teaching in 2003, Dennis and Debbie moved to Regina, Saskatchewan where he worked as a recruitment coordinator for Investors Group until 2016 and scouted hockey for the WHL’s Swift Current Broncos until present. Dennis was a proud Saskatchewan Roughriders fan, loved the Toronto Blue Jays, and enjoyed taking Debbie to country music concerts. He spent retirement alternating visits to each of the locations of his children, supporting his grandchildren in their sports and activities.
Dennis' Celebration of Life will be held at The Atlas Hotel (4177 Alberta Street, Regina, Sask) on July.7th, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. To view the livestream of the service, please see the link above that will be made live on the day of the service. For those attending, it will be a casual-dress ceremony.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Dennis Ulmer’s name to Athol Murray College of Notre Dame hockey program or the Bethune Cemetery.
