Obituary of Dr. Hellmut Rochus Lang

DR. HELLMUT LANG LANG, Dr. Hellmut Rochus passed away peacefully on July 4, 2014. Born in Leader, Saskatchewan in May 1933 to Austrian immigrant parents. Predeceased by his mother, Antonia, his father, Matthias, and infant brother, Gottfried. Left to miss him are his loving wife of 55 years, Leona, children Gregory, Anthony (Sarojini), Erich (Naho), Terri (Darren), and Diane (Gil), and grandchilden Renata, Isaak, Matt, and Jonah. Hellmut attended the University of Saskatchewan where he met Leona Lobsinger and earned his Bachelor of Education. He taught at Yorkton Collegiate Institute then Yorkton Regional High School in Yorkton, SK between 1958 until 1970. He earned his Masters of Science from Mankato State College in 1967. He and Leona moved to Regina in 1970 with their four kids where he obtained a position with the College of Education at the University of Regina. Another daughter, Amy Diane, came along in 1973. Hellmut earned his Doctorate of Education from the University of Northern Colorado in 1983. He retired from the University in 1998 and taught for some subsequent years in the Saskatchewan Urban Native Teaching Program (SUNTEP). During his career, he instructed countless teachers - educating was his ultimate passion. He had a special interest in First Nations education and twice received the Order of the Sash for his contribution to Metis education. His other passion was golf - on his time off, he could be found on the golf course working on his very respectable handicap. A gathering to raise a glass and celebrate Hellmut's life will be held in the fall. Special thanks to the Palliative Care team – especially nurse Jan and the nurses on 3A and at Grace Hospice.
