Obituary of Frederick Cyril McBeth

FREDERICK CYRIL MCBETH On the evening of October 31, 2014 Fred passed away peacefully with members of his family by his side after a courageous battle with cancer. Fred was born, raised and educated in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan before entering classes at the Saskatchewan Hospital in Weyburn where he graduated as a Psychiatric Nurse. He then went on to obtain a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from the University of Regina before entering the College of Law at the University of Saskatchewan, graduating in 1971. Fred's legal career of 42 years began at Balfour, Moss, Milliken, Laschuk, Kyle and Vancise in Regina and continued even into mid-October of this year. Fred was appointed Queen’s Counsel in 2001. Fred was passionate about the law and made many lifelong friends through his practice. He served as President of the Regina and Saskatchewan Bar Associations and was also an active member of the Canadian Bar Association. Fred belonged to numerous other groups and charitable organizations. One of his significant contributions was his involvement in establishing the Kinsman Foundation in 1974 and the organization of the first “Telemiracle" in Saskatchewan. He has also served as President of the Lorne and Evelyn Johnson Foundation and on various committees for the Canadian Cancer Society, Ducks Unlimited, Habitat for Humanity and the Regina Food Bank. As a member of the Regina Rotary Club, Fred and family hosted eight international exchange students. Fred’s (Fast One’s) greatest contribution to our community was his involvement in hockey, especially as a coach for over 30 years. He served as President of the Regina Boys Community Hockey League, and was instrumental in the amalgamation with the Queen City Hockey League. He also served as a board member of the Saskatchewan Hockey Association. Fred served on the organizing committee for the 1990 World Junior Hockey tournament in Regina as well as the chair of the Regina Pats Education Fund. He organized the Western Canadian Invitational Midget AA Hockey Tournament, now named after him, for over 20 years, hosting teams from across Canada and the USA. He was a mentor to many players and coaches and his influence is still felt in the hockey community today. Fred was a 42 year member of the YMCA, having a noon hour workout on almost a daily basis. He participated in numerous sporting activities including curling, skiing, racquetball, baseball and golf. He thoroughly enjoyed organizing many golf tournaments for Balfour Moss over the years. Fred was a three-time champion of one of the toughest fantasy football leagues in the country. His love of sports took him to many Grey Cup games and MLB baseball games over the years and he shared an annual trip to watch NFL games with his two sons and son-in-law. Fred was thrilled to watch his beloved San Francisco Giants win one more championship before he passed away. Fred was also an avid reader and supporter of the Regina Public Library. Fred leaves behind his loving wife Bev and their three children: son Kevan, his wife Cheri and their two children, Lauryn and Carter; son Scott, his wife Trisha and their daughters, Chloe and Abby; and daughter Kaylea (Kellie), her husband Curtis and their sons, Benjamin and Quentin.
