Lois Jopp

Obituary of Lois Mary Jopp

Lois grew up in Colfax, Saskatchewan, the youngest of three girls. She was the apple of her father's eye. He often said with pride she had “One foot in the furrow and cussed like a trooper!” Lois attended, and graduated from Luther College High School and Balfour Business College. At one point, Lois was expelled from Luther for crawling through a transom. However, her father could yell louder than the Head Master, so Lois was allowed to stay. At the age of 21, she met the love of her life, Alex Jopp. They had two daughters Susan and Shelley and were married for 50 years. Lois was honest and direct. She was not one to blindly follow the crowd, and marched to her own drummer. Lois was a loyal and caring friend and could always be counted on to give sound advice, typically in very colorful language. Her generous nature extended beyond her family and she was always quick to help others (as long as she agreed with what they were doing). She was a voracious reader and was virtually a walking encyclopedia on current events and history. Lois always liked a good laugh, and much preferred a humorous card to a sentimental one. She was punctual to a fault, her philosophy was, if you are not 15 minutes early, you are late, and she would not hesitate to let you know! Although some may feel that patience is a virtue, Lois was not one of them. She was easy to get a rise out of, much to the delight of her children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She had strong opinions, and once she had made up her mind about something, God himself could not have changed it! Her girls could always count on her to stand up for them and she had more than one school principal quaking in his boots. Lois was always up for a good game of cards and enjoyed a wide variety of games. One of her other great loves was Laguna Beach. She and Alex went every winter for over 30 years. Sports were a big part of her life. Not only was she a long standing season ticket holder of the Riders, she enjoyed watching golf, hockey, baseball, and football. She always enjoyed a good meal and was often heard to say “I should not be eating this” as she was taking seconds. Lois made no apologies about her enjoyment of smoking. She always used a cigarette holding reminiscent of batman's enemy the penguin. If you were ever to catch her ire she would wield her cigarette and holder at you like a deadly weapon while giving you the Nina look. Lois was always known for her colorful language yet was quick to correct her children and grandchildren if they swore stating “do as I say not as I do”. Getting the entire family together for special occasions was always very important to her whether you liked it or not! It was during one such occasion she was christened the swear grandma by a five year old friend of her youngest grandson. The name stuck and she relished it. Lois always met life head on and on her terms. This was also true of her passing. Her children and grandchildren sat vigil with her for hours that day solemn and speaking quietly. The family knew she was waiting for something. Then a comment was made causing laughter. The laughter spread throughout the room leaving many with tears of humor in their eyes. This had been what she was waiting for. Once the laughter died down Lois chose that moment to pass surrounded by her family and loving laughter. Lois is survived by her two daughters, son-in-law, grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimer Society of Saskatchewan. The family welcomes any stories or comments.
