Obituary of Alma June Swain

June 6, 1932 – June 14, 2015 Alma passed away peacefully at home in the company of family. She leaves to mourn her loving husband of 59 years, Harold; her daughters Cindy (Wayne) Johnson of Blackfalds Alberta, Kim (Don) Webb of San Anglelo, Texas; Son Tim (Kathy) of Bromhead, SK.; her seven loving grandchildren, Shalynn (Kelsey), Stephen (Eryn), Greg (Kassy), Erin, Nicolas, Katlyn (Kelby), Kris (Lori); twelve great grandchildren, Scotia, Jackson, Conner, Hazen, Braxton, Lexi, Kolby, Saidie, Kayden, Aspen, Kayla and Carter; her sister Blanche Peters; sisters-in-law Marilyn (Alan) Ferrett and Daphne Butler and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents Ethel and Charles Butler; her brother Harold Butler and her in laws Margaret and Wingate Swain. Alma was born in the fishing hamlet of Bauline, Newfoundland and moved with her family to St. John's in her early years. She trained as a nurse at the Salvation Army Grace Hospital and on graduation in 1954, moved to Halifax where she nursed for a short while before joining the Canadian Army as a Nursing Sister. She received her military training at the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps School in Camp Borden, Ontario. On graduation she was posted to Camp Shilo, Manitoba where she met her husband to be, Harold, who was one of her patients. They were married on the 19th of May 1956. Alma left the military when she married, but continued to nurse in various locations across the country including Moose Jaw, Saskatoon, Ottawa and Edmonton. Their military travel included twenty three family moves which crossed Canada, and included the USA and Europe. Alma enjoyed spending time at the family cottage and the twenty five cruises she and Harold took in retirement. In later years Alma and Harold enjoyed an annual two month winter visit with Kim and her family in Texas. She was an avid bowler and was active in two ladies leagues. She enjoyed coffee with her friends and the odd excursion to the Casino for Friday lunch where she had several big wins on the slots. She was an avid cribbage player and looked forward to three games and a cocktail before dinner each day. Memorial Service will be held at Speers Funeral Chapel, 2136 College Ave. Regina, SK., on Friday June 19, 2015, at 1:00 pm. Private interment in Springside Cemetery at a later date. In Lieu of flowers friends so inclined may make a memorial donation, to the Canadian Lung Association, 1750 Courtwood Cres., Suite 300, Ottawa, Ontario, K2C 2B5 or a charity of their choice in Alma’s name.
