I was deeply saddened to hear of Al's passing. There are too many memories to count from life guarding days with Al. He was such a great mentor, lifeguard and swim instructor, but above all, I remember just feeling good when he was around. If Al was on duty, life was good -- not just for the lifeguards, but the swimmers as well. I know this because our dad swims at the Lawson every morning in the winter and would often remark on what a pleasure "that Al" was, always smiling and saying hello so early in the morning. My deepest condolences to Gretel, Manny and the rest of Al's family. I never knew he had a son, but it makes me happy knowing there is a little Al left behind after such joy was taken from the world. Take care.

Dear Keith and Janet, I never had the pleasure of meeting Alan, Gretel or Manny but know from the lovely words honouring your son he would have been a person people loved to spend time with. I am so very sorry for his sudden passing. What a tragic loss for you all. Sincerely, Dianna

Gretel,
I am so sorry and shocked to hear about your dear Al. At his age, one would have thought he'd have had many years of life ahead to enjoy with you and Manny, but sadly it wasn't to be. Please know that things will become easier in the fullness of time and that you both are in my thoughts and prayers. Don't hesitate to ask if I can help in any way.

Keith and Janet,
I'm so sorry. I look back on my years as one of Al's best friends when we were young in North Battleford, with great affection. We had great times together, and his friendship helped shape what I am today. Thinking of you.

I was part of the City of Regina lifeguard family with Al for a decade, spending many years working together at the North West Leisure Center and a few summers working at & later managing Regent pool together. I looked forward to days I worked with him, for the chats we had, his cheery and optimistic nature, the knowledge he shared with us & his passion for teaching swimming. Al was always lots of fun to be around, at work, 'Lifeguard Olympics', pay day nights or other celebrations spent with the guards!
I watched Al & Gretel's great love for each other over the years. I am deeply saddened by the news of Al's passing & offer my sincere condolences to Gretel, Manny and all his family & friends who loved him so. May Al's spirit continue to live on in his son , Manny. Sending lots of love across the miles from Ontario.
