Obituary of Alan John Comstock

FEBRUARY 26, 1974 – JUNE 14, 2015 It is with profound sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Alan John Comstock, 41, of Regina on June 14, 2015. Beloved husband of Gretel (Rachor) Comstock and proud father of Manfred John Evert Comstock, Alan – or Al to his many friends – is also survived by his parents Keith and Janet (Harder) Comstock; brother Matthew Comstock; nephew Kingston Comstock; grandmother Linda Harder, and a great number of special aunts, uncles, cousins, nephews, nieces, in-laws and devoted friends. Alan was born in Prince George, B.C. but spent his early years in Regina. Schooling took place in Carlyle, Prince Albert and North Battleford as his parents followed work and career opportunities through the years. Alan was a good student; quiet for the most part but his quick smile and good humour made him a favorite of (most of) his teachers and classmates. Starting as a scared stiff of water 5 year old, Alan stuck to his involvement in aquatics and eventually made a career of it working in North Battleford, Wetaskewin and various locations for the City of Regina for many years. Alan had a true talent for teaching and assured many apprehensive parents and young swimmers not to worry because he, too, had once been afraid to put his face in the water and look where he was now! It was aquatics that in 1996 gave Alan the chance to meet the mermaid of his dreams…a young woman who shared his love of chlorine and the front crawl, in the person of Gretel Rachor. As their love blossomed and grew it was readily apparent to their parents and friends that they were made for each other, even though for some reason it took Alan a decade or so to get around to popping the question! Following their marriage in May of 2010, Alan and Gretel became the devoted and proud parents of Manfred when he made his arrival in 2012. Alan loved his wife and son with his whole heart and soul. Being totally honest about it, Al had his moments and once he made up his mind about something, right or wrong, that was the way it was. But his devotion to Gretel and to his wonderful sweet boy Manny never wavered. Al could be a bit of a worrier, but that was more than offset by his joy for life and all that it brought. Although it sometimes took him a while to figure out when he had a good thing he was never one to do things halfway. Whether it was cajoling his brother into a trip to Oregon to pick up a vintage car or doing 54 holes of golf in one day at Long Creek or deciding that being a great BBQ chef wasn’t enough, it was necessary to learn how to judge competitions, once a decision was made, it was full steam ahead. Fiercely loyal and protective of family and friends, if you had Alan in your corner you had an ally to the end. Whether you needed a spare speedo, a hand with yard work or a willing and enthusiastic partner in whatever shenanigans seemed to be a good idea at the time. Alan also knew the value of an honest day’s work and somewhat to his chagrin, often came out with homilies from his father and grandfathers. “If a job’s worth doing, it’s worth doing right” and “Don’t forget to check the oil and tire pressure” come quickly to mind! Alan was taken from his loving family and friends far too soon. We all miss him terribly already and can’t imagine what we will do in the coming months and years. But, in the true spirit of how Alan lived his life, we will continue to love and support each other in remembrance of him. Gretel and Manny and the rest of the family are humbled and so very appreciative of the support they have received from so many friends, coworkers and neighbours. We are truly grateful and blessed in this very sad time. A Celebration of Al’s Life will be held at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, 3510 Queen Street, Regina, SK., on Tuesday, June 23, 2015 at 2:00 pm with Pastor Craig Moeller officiating. Alan’s family has established a trust fund in support of Manny’s education. Donations in lieu of floral or other tributes would be greatly appreciated.
