Obituary of Joseph Douglas Scarfe

JOSEPH DOUGLAS SCARFE The family and friends of Joe Scarfe mourn his passing on July 16, 2015, in Regina at the age of 53. Joe is survived by his wife Brenda; daughter Jamie; his mother Hazel; brother John (daughter Montana); sister Mary McLellan (Greg) and their children Kate, Ben and Carson; sister Anna Sanders (Erin and Kali); mother-in-law Anne Walker; brothers-in-law Bruce (Fern) Walker and their children Janna and Shelby, and Terry (Brenda) Walker and their children Kaitlin and Brett. Joe was predeceased by his father Al Scarfe in 2010 and his father-in-law Wally Walker in 2013. Joe was a rock solid man of character whose family and many friends enjoyed his company, his quiet ways and that ever-present dry sense of humour. He was born February 24, 1962 in Uranium City and grew up in La Ronge. After graduation, Joe completed an auto body journeyman program at Kelsey Institute in Saskatoon, then started a career at SGI in 1984, where he held many positions and obtained his Certified Insurance Professional designation. In 1987, he married Brenda and they adopted their daughter Jamie in 2001. Joe had many interests: cars, hockey, golf, travel, carpentry, and gardening. Friends from Sunset United Church valued his generosity and talents on the Property team. He was a committed Habs fan, with an arena seat from the Forum to prove it, and he proudly wore green with the rest of Rider Nation. In July of 2006, the diagnosis and treatment of brain cancer changed the course of Joe’s life. The past nine years have included the pleasures of fatherhood and ordinary life, and also some extraordinary family trips to Disney destinations, Mexico, most Canadian provinces, and an ice road trip to Uranium City with his brother John. But most important to Joe was his family life and his role as a dad. One of the blessings of these past years at home has been the gift of seeing his little girl grow to become a fine young woman who has many good memories of her loving dad. Brenda and Jamie are grateful to all those who have supported the Scarfe family: Dr. Buwembo, who first saved Joe’s life - and his sense of humour - with remarkable surgery, to the many health professionals for treatment, to Wascana Grace Hospice for palliative care, and to the family, church community, friends and neighbours for love and encouragement. A Memorial Service for Joe will be held at Sunset United Church, 177 Sunset Drive, Regina, SK., on Saturday July 25, 2015, at 2:00 p.m. with Kathy Platt officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts for Jamie’s education fund are gratefully accepted. To leave an online message of condolence, please visit www.speersfuneralchapel.com
