Obituary of Edward George Child

Our family has lost a wonderful father and grandfather. Ted passed away peacefully on Friday, October 16 at the Pasqua Hospital. Ted is survived by his daughter Holly (Mike) and son Jeff (Nancy); their mother, Pat Matheson; grandsons Rob (Caitlin) and Stephen (Marcela) and step-granddaughters Jessica, Sarah and Samantha. Dad was a lifelong Reginan. He attended Davin Elementary School and graduated from Central Collegiate where he was a proud member of the Gophers, both basketball and football teams. Dad’s working career was extremely important to him. He worked for 62 years as an insurance broker and was an owner/shareholder of Cook’s Insurance and its successor companies, now Harvard Western Insurance. He proudly achieved the highest designation at that time – Certified Charter Insurance Broker and was well respected in the industry. Ted belonged to Wesley United Church where he took great pleasure in rating the hymns after each service. The family would like to thank the members for their support, particularly in his later years. Ted was always involved in the community. His father and grandfather were city aldermen and he was pleased when the city named Child Avenue in their honour. Ted was past president of the Assiniboia Club and K-40. He was a member of several clubs including Kinsmen and Rotary. He valued not only the many friends he made through these clubs, but also the charitable work they did. Friends were important to Ted and he developed lifelong relationships, some even dating back to his elementary school days. Ted was the consummate sportsman. He was a good athlete who loved to play badminton, basketball, football, tennis, squash, golf and to ski. He always enjoyed attending the games of his children and grandchildren. Ted wished to be cremated. His ashes will be interred with his parents, Lona and Edward in the plot they saved for him at the Regina Cemetery, 2120 4th Avenue. A Memorial Service will be held at Speers Funeral Chapel, 2136 College Avenue, Regina, SK, on Tuesday October 20, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, friends who wish to donate in Ted’s memory may donate to Mother Teresa Middle School 1976 North 2nd. Ave. Regina, SK, S4R 0Y1 or to KidSport Regina, 1870 Lorne Street, Regina, SK, S4P 2L7.
