Obituary of Ira Kidd Mumford

Ira was born on the family farm at Mortlach, Saskatchewan on January 6, 1920. He was predeceased by his parents, Joseph and Johnena Mumford; sister Dorothy Mumford; first wife Mimmie Lindstrom; daughter Shelley Mumford; son Brian Mumford and his second wife Marjorie Mumford. Ira is survived by his loving wife Shirley; sons, Jack (Dawn) Thrasher of Calgary AB, Dave (Joanne) Mumford of Nanaimo, BC and Larry (Catherine) Mumford of Saskatoon, SK, and by Shirley’s son Rob (Marijo) of Burlington, ON and daughter Jane Rowley of Red Deer, AB. He is also survived by grandchildren, Holly Mumford and great-granddaughter Olivia; Christa Mumford and great-grandson Marek Kelln; Keely Thrasher (Spencer Ross) and great-granddaughter Kailyn; Colin Thrasher, and Dylan Mumford and by Rob and Marijo’s daughter Ashley Rowley, and Jane’s son Graeme Rowley Johnson. Ira received his formal education at Elkhead Elementary School, Mortlach High School and Moose Jaw Normal School. Ira was employed for his entire working career of 44 years by Saskatchewan Wheat Pool. During a five year leave of absence (1940-1945), Ira was a member of the RCAF serving as a Coastal and Transport Command Pilot in the United Kingdom and North African Sectors. The last sixteen years of his employment was served as Chief Executive Officer of the Company. During his years in senior management and for several years after his formal retirement, he served as a Director and Officer of several related companies in which the Pool shared ownership. During Ira’s business career he attended and later was a member of The Board of Directors of the Banff School of Advanced Management. He was a member of the Duke of Edinburgh’s second Commonwealth Study Conference in Canada. He was a member of the Agricultural Institute of Canada and the Saskatchewan Institute of Agrologists. He served a term as President of the Regina Branch and Provincial Councils of both of the above organizations. Ira was a member of the Western Grain Elevators Association. He served for two years as an advisor to a Federal Government Advisory Committee on Grain Handling in Ottawa. Ira was a long serving member of the Regina downtown Rotary Club and the recipient of several Paul Harris recognitions. Ira was a long-time member of Wesley United and First Presbyterian Church. A Memorial Service for Ira will be held at First Presbyterian Church, 2170 Albert Street, Regina, SK, on Wednesday January 27, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. Interment will take place in Riverside Memorial Park. Flowers gratefully declined. Those so wishing may make a memorial donation in Ira’s name to the charity of your choice.
