My condolences to you Mary on the loss of Dave, who with you, have been the strength of character & Christian example for your family & relatives.
Dave was a raconteur second to none. His stories based on his knowledge, respect & empathy for others told with his outstanding humour are legend. Dave, as a person, you had the highest respect as an educator & administrator of your students & staffs who you motivated to be the best that they could be in their lives.

Dear Hornung family,
I am one of the many children who Dave cared for as principal of Holy Rosary school. He was so kind and friendly to us, and his assemblies were a great start to our day. On the few occasions where I found myself in the principal's office for various infractions, I knew he meant business but never feared his wrath, only his disappointment.
One of my memories of Mr. Hornung was an experience of total shock seeing him at our end of the year school barbeque wearing SHORTS! The kids in my grade were completely dumbfounded as he flipped burgers on the grill helping out with the food, we'd never seen him out of his suits and ties before and it probably had never occurred to us before then that he was a regular person who could wear shorts.
After my elementary school years I also had the chance to sing with Dave in choir but I don't think I ever dared call him Dave, he was always Mr. Hornung.
My thoughts and prayers are with all of you as you move through this time of loss. My own father Bill was a teacher and principal, and I remember being so touched by past students sharing memories of him when he died in 2008 that I wanted to make the time to come here and share my own.
All my best,
Krista

My heartfelt condolences to the Hornung family for the loss of your husband, Dad, grandpa, great grandpa. "Mr. Hornung" was my grade 7 and 8 teacher at St. Paul School. He is one of the people in my life who greatly influenced me. I am now well into my 50's and I still think of ways he modeled maturity, wisdom, and a sense of dignity for all. He taught me much more than academics. The world is a better place because of him. A great loss for you - his family, but heaven rejoices!
