Obituary of Michael Thomas Pinay

We are deeply saddened by the sudden death of Michael Thomas Pinay (Okimaw Piyêsiw). On July 19, 2016, surrounded by family and friends, he left to the spirit world. Mike was born March 30, 1947 and is from Peepeekisis First Nation. Predeceased by his grandparents Clifford and Genevieve Pinay; Mother Olivine Pinay, adopted Mother Rena Comes Last, adopted Father Henry Ironchild and Son-in-law Willard Okanee. Mike is survived by partner Sandra Shakespeare; Brothers Mitch and Donny; Sisters Lorraine and Ginny; Children Mike Davis, Cliff Davis (Misty), Shawna Pinay, Thomas Pinay, Michelle Bellegarde, Randall Bellegarde (Gail), Mikayla Pinay (Nolan), Tim Pinay, Leonard Daniels; Grandchildren Mike (Pamela), Bailey, Jessie, Dana, Danae, Adam, Aaron, Hilary, Jessica, James (Mary), Garret (Cassie), David, Hope, Kendra, Quannah, Talon (Talz), Randy, Kayto (Melissa), Taye, Janaye, Brielle, Sincere and numerous great grandchildren. During his lifetime, and through traditional values, Mike adopted and was adopted by many people and into many family circles. Mike valued his traditional ceremonial ways and was a strong believer in the power of prayer. He was a hard working leader and passionate advocate for Education, Treaty Rights and youth. He cherished working with the Bold Eagle Program and treated each participant as one of his own grandchildren. Mike traveled throughout Canada and United States and along his path he has worked with numerous First Nation and non-First Nation governments. He also advised and gave of himself in service to many individuals and organizations. He worked tirelessly in support of First Nations people and established the foundations of bridges and relationships with non-First Nations people. When Mike was not traveling, you would often see him at his Office at the 4th & Albert Tim Hortons with his large dbl dbl. Mike was a hard working, family oriented, humorous, outspoken and kind-hearted person. On behalf of Mike, the family would like to thank Pasqua Hospital, General Hospital and Speers Funeral Chapel for all the kindness, generosity, and support that has been provided. The family would like to send out a special thank you to all the friends and family that prayed, sent well wishes, offered kind words and supported Mike and the family during this time. At Dad’s request there will be a viewing at First Nations University in Regina on Thursday, July 21, 2016 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. A Traditional Wake will be begin at 4:00 p.m. at Whitecalf Gymnasium, Lebret SK. Funeral Service will be held on Friday, July 22, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. also at Whitecalf Gymnasium. Burial will take place at Pinay Family Cemetery, Peepeekisis First Nation.
