Lily Wong

Obituary of Lily Wong

On Sunday, September 25, 2016, Lily Wong passed away peacefully in her sleep, to be with her Lord and Savior, at the graceful age of 96. She joins her husband of 72 years, Arthur, who predeceased her in 2009. Lily was born in Ogema, Saskatchewan, where her parents ran the hotel. At the age of five, her family moved back to China, where she grew up. After marrying Arthur at the age of 17, they returned to Saskatchewan and settled in Lake Alma, where they ran the general store and raised their seven children. In 1956, they moved to Regina and went into the apartment business. Lily and Arthur were devoted to their faith in Christ and served the community selflessly in God's name. They were active members of the Central Evangelical Lutheran Church and the Regina Chinese Alliance Church. Lily was a Sunday School teacher and a member of the Ladies Fellowships. She volunteered with the Open Door Society, helping many refugees start new lives in Regina. She also volunteered for the Lutheran Chaplaincy doing hospital visitations for over 25 years, visiting the sick and praying with them. In her late forties, Lily obtained her driver’s license and became the volunteer chauffeur for many elderly women. She drove them to church, took them grocery shopping, and drove them to doctors’ appointments, where she helped interpret for those who couldn’t speak English. She continued to do so until she retired from driving at the age of 88. Also in her late forties, she started piano lessons and reached Grade 8 proficiency. She took organ lessons and played for both churches. She also sang in the choir. To her last days, Lily loved listening to hymns. Lily opened her home to visiting clergy, friends, and family on countless occasions. She loved to cook and fed crowds with her homemade apple pie, cookies, dumplings, buns, and soups. She was dedicated to her family and was a loving wife to Arthur. She is survived by two sisters; her children, Anna May Mah, Mary (David) Bing-Wo, Robert (Suzie), Jean, Rosalie (Al) Mah, Frank, and Pat; 15 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. We will miss her dearly and carry her memory in our hearts forever. We greatly appreciate the staff at the Regina Lutheran Home for their loving care in her final years. Memorial Service will be held at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, 190 Massey Rd, Regina, SK on Friday, October 7, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. Lily was laid to rest beside Arthur at a private internment in September. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Regina Lutheran Home, Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Regina Chinese Alliance Church or a charity of your choice.
