Obituary of Alfred Jacob Gettle

ALFRED JACOB GETTLE March 18, 1935 – December 6, 2016 It is with great sadness that the family of Alfred Jacob Gettle announce his peaceful passing on Tuesday, December 6, 2016 at the age of 81. Alfred was predeceased by his wife Leona (née Wahpoosyan); sons, Ronald and Blaine; daughter Angela; brothers, Edward, Rudy, and Ernest; sister Helen; and his parents, Carl and Theresa. He is survived by his two sons, Darwin and Jeffrey (Laurel); grandchildren, Christopher, Leah, Ronnie Jr., Dustin, Madeline, and Carey; four great-grandchildren; brothers, John and William; sisters, Eva (Harold) Nanskiville and Lorraine (Helfried) Zeck; as well as numerous uncles, cousins, and friends. Alfred was born and raised in East Regina. He was enrolled with the RCAF Moose Jaw until he met his future wife in 1957. Leona, who was from Sakimay First Nation, blessed him with five children. Alfred became a skilled carpenter and over the next several years he built many houses with Gettle Brothers Construction. He took great pride in providing brand new homes and the fresh carpet his children and grandkids would play on. Alfred had to endure the winter seasons and his rambunctious actions earned him the nickname “Sledgehammer.” Hunting was his fall hobby and during this season it was also time to cheer for his favorite hockey team. Although “The Sledge” had a swarthy appearance this be-lied his affinity for gardening and raising many dogs. Once retired, he would spend more time at the casino. He had tremendous luck betting the horse races and had many big pay-outs. More recently as he had mellowed with age, we just called him Dad and Alfie. Alfie will always be remembered as a wonderful father who enjoyed good natured joking or having fun with friends and family. The family wishes to extend thanks to Parkside Extendicare for the last two years of your help with stubborn “Old Pops.” A private service will be held with interment in Riverside Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, those so wishing may make memorial donations in Alfred’s name to the Alzheimer Society of Saskatchewan, 301-2550 12th Avenue, Regina, SK S4P 3X1. “You were the character of all characters Dad, and we always will love you. Any burdens you may have carried have now been lifted. Somewhere, sometime there is going to be more Blue Money Riding on the Maple Leafs again!” “Remembering you is easy Dad, we do that every day, it’s the heartache of losing you that never goes away!” To leave an online message of condolence, please visit www.speersfuneralchapel.com
