On behalf of the Faculty of Media, Art, and Performance, I would like to convey my deepest condolences to the family and friends of David who successfully completed his graduate degree with our faculty a short while ago. We were very lucky to have him with us and so pleased that he was able to complete one of his dreams before he was called away.

My deepest sympathies to Gaylene, Athena, Josh and all David's family from across the other side of the Atlantic from David's "English Friend". I just want to say that I feel deeply for you all. I was knocked speechless by the tragic news and I will miss my friend greatly. I had the honour to be the recipient of David's humour, his thoughts and his passion for art as a way of healing and learning. His humour was nearly always at my expense but in a way that made me feel very much at home over there. His thoughts were very much of his people but not in any narrow way but with his eyes open. David was honest and straight shooting. He shared a lot with me about his past and about his culture in a way, along with his incessant teasing, made me feel very included. In short he was a great guy and a good friend. I shall miss him a lot and will I will always remember him. My thoughts are with you all and a bit of me is over there with you all. Our Devon home is always open to you.

My most sincere condolences to David's family. I am heartbroken for you and am reeling from this news myself. I've known Dave ever since we were kids going to Imperial school in the 80s and throughout high school at Robert Usher. Even back in those days, Dave's skill as an artist left us all amazed and, many times, with sore stomachs from laughing at his brilliant sense of humour. As I'm sure his classmates can attest, he was also one of the most unassuming but toughest guys in school. This became evident in gym class when his quiet, soft demeanor was replaced with a quiet but powerfully fierce competitive force, which most times left his opponents utterly eliminated. We all admired him...a lot.
We've kept in touch from time to time over the years through Facebook and it was always great to catch up whenever we saw each other on the street, or wherever we'd be in the same place at the same time.
Even though I haven't been part of Dave's adult life, I've come to learn of his amazing accomplishments as an artist, a teacher, and as a father from afar. I am truly proud to call Dave a friend. I will miss him. My thoughts and prayers to Dave's family and friends.

I am very sorry for your loss. I didn't know him well, but he was one of the few teachers I actually met from when my daughter went to Thom. She was going through a rough time, and he was a very encouraging and supportive teacher who seemed to really care about the kids. Blessings on your whole family during this difficult time..

I worked with David at Thom collegiate about 10 years ago. I remember his friendliness and welcoming personality. He always had time for his students and related to them on a personal level. I remember coaching track and field with him and he would mention how fast he used to be as a sprinter. I couldn't tell if he was serious but he and the students would laugh about it. I'll definitely miss him, he was a great guy.

I was very sad to hear the passing of such as inspiration. I had the privilege to meet David Benjoe from taken pre-interns to have interns. He was well spoken, and inspired me to not only be a better teacher, but reach out in our First Nations Community. He was not afraid to share stories opinions, and his life experiences with us. I enjoyed listening to his stories of his grandparents. He was inspirational to many out there and was one of the excellent role models that we have for Men in our community. My thoughts, prayers, go out to his family, students, and co-workers. May the creator sending healing Angels around you as your loved one continues his journey.
