Obituary of Frances Mae Doering (nee Scott)

Frances Mae Doering (nee Scott), passed away peacefully with her family by her side on Thursday October 5, 2017. Fran was born on September 27, 1951. Predeceased by her father John Scott and sister JoAnne Hodgins, Fran is survived by her mother Bernice Scott, husband Keith, children Kim, Kris (wife Sandy and children Carver, Cadel and Imogen) and Kari (children Eli and Boone); siblings Jim (Shari) Scott, Rob Scott, Brenda Scott and Donna (Bernie Adilman) Scott as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

School, gardening, and playing with her siblings around the farm were her main interests in her early years. When she received the gift of a nurse’s hat, and later a doctor’s kit, she began training for her career in health care in earnest.

Through high school, Fran took piano lessons and participated in 4H. She volunteered with Arlington Beach Bible Camp in the summer, working in the kitchen for a couple weeks. She also spent time working in the post office in the summer months.

Fran began nursing school at Regina General Hospital beginning in 1969. There, she met friends she cherished until her passing. Eventually, they graduated together in one of the last classes of the General Hospital Nursing School.

Keith Doering, her future husband, met Fran at a University dance which she attended with JoAnne.  Their first date and what became their favorite meal out was Teen Burgers from A&W. This was a tradition that continued on their anniversaries, when Keith would bring home Teen Burgers to mark the occasion. They spent a lot of time watching sports together – Roughrider games and Grey Cup trips as well as watching friends and family playing ball.

Keith and Fran were married on July 22, 1972 in the United Church in Govan, SK. In the next 6 years they lived in three different houses and welcomed a child in each one. Kim in 1976, Kris in 1978 and Kari in 1982.

Career was important to Fran as she loved knowing that she could help people. She worked her entire career at Regina General Hospital in the Medical Unit, Coronary Care, Hemodialysis and Pre Admission Clinic. She also worked at the Dr. Paul Schwann Centre. Her career spanned 42 years and she was able to care for many people both inside and outside of the hospital.

Fran’s caring nature also extended to the community where she volunteered for Ruth Pawson Parent Teacher Association, managed multiple sports teams, campaigned door to door for the Kidney Foundation, Diabetes Association and Canadian Cancer Society.

She also made sure she stayed active and participated in many sports. She curled for many years, took annual family ski trips and started to play ringette at 45 years old.

Family was also really important to Fran. She was very proud of her children and her grandkids were the apple of her eye. She made sure to create special memories for them whether during family trips to the Yukon, Quebec , a Disney Cruise or special Sunday suppers with the family gathering to share and laugh at things that happened during the week.

After Fran was diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer, she became a passionate advocate to help to ensure that other women and their families would not have to travel the same journey. Fran attended Sask. Ovarian Cancer Survivor support meetings, volunteered for their fundraising events, attended Galas, taught nursing students how to care for cancer patients and spoke with many about symptoms to watch for.

Fran will always be remembered for her bright smile, easy laugh and loudly exclaiming, “Can you stand it?!”

Memorial Service will take place at Our Saviors Lutheran Church, 190 Massey Road, Regina, SK, on Wednesday October 11, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. Private family interment in Regina Memorial Gardens. Flowers are gratefully declined. Family and friends so wishing may make donations, in memoriam, to Ovarian Cancer Canada.
