Obituary of Eugene Leonard Gartner
EUGENE LEONARD GARTNER
March 10, 1926 – January 21, 2018
Eugene passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 21, 2018 at the age of 91 years. He was predeceased by his parents, Peter and Felicia Gartner; son Brent Gartner; brothers, Joe, Henry, Peter, John, and George Gartner; sisters, Phyllis Hamman, Adeline Gartner, Flora Krassman, Mary Benz, Betty Schmidt, and Irene Selinger; mother- and father-in-law, Martha and Prosper Brynooghe; brothers-in-law, Joe Krassman, John Benz, Bob Schmidt, George Selinger, Gilbert, and Daniel Brynooghe; and sisters-in-law, Rita Gartner, Mary Gartner, and Irene Brynooghe. Eugene is survived by his loving wife Simonne E. Gartner; children, Dianne Morgan (Jim), Ken (Linda), Gloria Liete (Dave), Daryl (Anna), Bernadette Sanheim (Ken), Gerry (Kathy), and Sherry Sabourin (Leon); as well as numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and other family and friends. Eugene was born on March 10, 1926 on the family farm outside Dilke, SK. He grew up on the farm for four years, then moved to a farm in Craik, SK. Eugene attended school at Erie School, which he walked to every day. He obtained his grade eight education and worked on the farm with his family until his early twenties. Eugene then started working at SaskPower in Davidson, SK. While in Davidson, he met Simonne Brynooghe and they married on November 25, 1947. Together, they returned to the family farm and a year later bought a house back in Davidson, where he continued working at SaskPower for five years, while farming with his brothers. In 1955, Eugene purchased the farm where they raised eight children. He retired from farming in 1972 and moved to Regina, SK with the children who still lived at home with them. While in Regina, Eugene received his First Class Fireman’s and Steam Engineer’s Certificate and worked at various government facilities in Regina. He ended up working at the Museum of Natural History, which he enjoyed the most, until retiring in 1986 at the age of 60 years. Eugene spent his last years in Sunset Extendicare. A special thank you to the staff at Sunset Extendicare and the Regina General Hospital for all their help and assistance and to Eugene’s daughter Bernie Sanheim and son Daryl Gartner, and all the family for their constant care of dad. Prayers will be held at Speers Funeral Chapel, 2136 College Avenue, Regina, SK on Wednesday, January 24, 2018 (Tonight) at 7:00 p.m. Funeral Mass will be held at St. Martin de Porres, 4720 Castle Road, Regina, SK on Thursday, January 25, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Peter Pham as celebrant. Interment in Kenaston Cemetery on Friday, January 26, 2018 at 1:30 p.m. Donations in memory of Eugene, may be made to the Diabetes Association, 917A Albert Street, Regina, SK S4R 2R6.
