Mom grew up in Saskatoon in the home of Cannon Roy and Marjorie Manwaring. She was raised with her older sisters Peggy and Nancy and twin brother Peter. It was there she honed her sharp British wit. She married her first love, Ron Atchison, at 19, and they soon headed down to Regina where Dad played football with the Saskatchewan Roughriders for 17 years. Mom developed a great love and understanding of the game that she carried with her, long past Dad’s playing years. As mother to us three kids, Margaret, Gordon and Kathy, Mom set a relaxed and happy home full of love and lots of laughter, where friends and neighbours were always welcome. She supported us in whatever endeavors we chose, including becoming a provincial judge in Women’s gymnastics. Her creativity was shown in the clothes she sewed and the many projects she undertook. Mom worked for Sears Catalogue in the mid to late 70’s, but after weddings for Margaret and Kathy, recognized there was a place in the market for someone to assist with wedding planning. Thus, The BridesMaid was born.  From humble beginnings in our basement on Empress Street, to a 2700 square foot Albert Street location, Mom developed into a very successful business woman. She ran her shop very much like our home, relaxed, open, and lots of fun to be in. Soon after closing The BridesMaid, Mom was fortunate enough to meet and marry Howard Vollhoffer in 2000. Mom and Howard have enjoyed these happy years hosting delicious dinners for family and friends, and visiting children and grandchildren from California to New York and right across Canada. Until falling ill in early December, Mom remained very active, swimming with the “merpeople” twice a week at the Sandra Schmeirler, nurturing friendships, cheering on the Riders, and mastering Instagram and Twitter so she could keep in close touch with her grandchildren and compare notes on their favourite political podcasts. Regardless of how Mom’s life changed and transformed over eight plus decades these things remained constant, she had an agelessness about her that allowed her to fit in with any group. She was always true to who she was, which made it very easy for all of us around her to be accepted exactly as we are. Thank you, Mom, you were a gift to us all. Isaiah 30:15 “In quietness and confidence shall be your strength.” Memorial Service will be held at Christ Lutheran Church, 4825 Dewdney Avenue, Regina, SK on Friday, January 25, 2019 at 10:30 a.m. Donations in Monica’s memory may be made to the building fund of her home church, Harvest City, 2202 8th Avenue North, Regina, SK, S4R 7T9, or to a charity of your choice.
